Organic Field Day

Organic Seed Production

2014 MOSES Organic Farmers of the Year

Prairie Road Organic Seed and Farm
Fullerton, North Dakota

Saturday, Aug. 2, 2014

Organized by the Northern Plains Sustainable Agriculture Society.

Prairie Road Organic Farm is home to the 2014 MOSES Organic Farmers of the Year—the Podolls: David, Ginger, Dan, Theresa. The Podolls began producing certified organic vegetable seed in 1997 under contract with various certified organic garden seed companies. In addition to contract production, the Podolls now market their seed under their own seed label, Prairie Road Organic Seed.

At this field day, the Podoll family shared their tips and techniques along with their passion for seed, gardening and agriculture. The tour included: field crops, heritage wheat variety screening, green bean and carrot variety trials, pepper breeding project, organic seed production plots, including heirloom, bean and tomato varieties and the family’s impressive deep mulch garden, which they haven’t tilledfor over 30 years. Superb eating qualities and reliable ‘workhorse’ varieties are the focus of their garden and seed production. The Podolls have released 7 vegetable varieties bred on their farm for performance and taste by farmer/breeder, David Podoll: Uncle David’s Dakota Dessert squash, Sweet Dakota Rose watermelon, Dakota Tears onion, Dakota Winter onion, Dakota Sport tomato, Wachichu flint corn, and Dakota Black Pop popcorn.
