Raising sheep organically can be a challenge. Bonnie Wideman will share tips she has learned over the years to produce high quality organic lamb, wool and sheepskins on her farm. She will discuss ways to manage parasites and keep sheep healthy through all stages of life. She uses rotational grazing for her sheep and beef herds, selling products from both to wholesale buyers and directly to consumers. Maintaining the animals on a mostly grass-based diet has required special attention to the quality and diversity of grass and legumes on the farm’s pastures and hay field. She'll talk about her grazing rotation, her sheep handling equipment, and how she trains her working dogs.

In addition, we will tour the farm’s fields while Jean Stramel from the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) talks about how to evaluate and improve the quality of a pasture. Stramel will demonstrate how to use the NRCS “Pasture Condition Score Sheet,” which uses 10 factors to evaluate pasture quality, identify problem areas and choose corrective actions.

This Organic Field Day is valuable to farmers who want to learn more about raising sheep, as well as any farmer interested in producing quality forages for livestock.
