July 22 - Organic Farm Field Day - Goodhue, MN

This on-farm field day will focus on:

  • Soil building
  • Crop rotation
  • Weed and insect management
  • Organic grains, row crops, forages
Jon and his three boys live and work on their 580 acre farm with permanent pasture. The Luhman's raise organic grass-fed beef and lamb and grow organic corn, soybeans, oats, wheat and forages. Using a diverse rotation and a variety of mechanical techniques for weed control, they produce feed for both their own livestock and for sale to other organic farmers in the region. An experienced grazier, Luhman is a beef supplier for Thousand Hills Cattle Co. in Cannon Falls, MN.

July 26-27 - Kickapoo Country Fair - La Farge, WI
Great music, a variety of organic food, activities for children and a chance to learn homesteading skills are all a part of this festival celebrating organic agriculture. Thisevent will be a showcase of rural cultural traditions, farm and garden exhibits, music, dance, arts, natural and organic foods and cooking, green housing and renewable energy, community health and education, environmental responsibility, and eco-development.

July 28 - Alternative Hog Production Workshops - St. Charles, MN
The Land Stewardship Project is working with the USDA's Risk Management Agency and Farm Service Agency to put on two free alternative/niche hog production workshops for beginning and established farmers. Topics include feed alternatives to corn and soybeans as well as the economics of natural and organic hog farming in the context of high input prices and low-cost start up strategies. Presenters will include faculty members from Iowa State University and the University of Minnesota, hog farmers and representatives of feed mills and marketing firms.

July 30 - Pro Producer Summer Conference - Albert Lea, MN
This interactive, educational and informative event is designed for producers, their spouses and other Ag professionals. Learn and share their experiences about producing more and higher quality with less, improving livestock operations, composting liquid manuer and optimizing their own health. This event will provide updated knowledge for farmers including organic growers and livestock producers as well as those who want to raise a high brix garden.
Cost: Ranges from $50 to $200 depending on if you're attending one to three days or half days or if you're an individual or couple.

August 1-2 - GRAZEFEST® - Verndale, MN
GRAZEFEST® is a national awareness campaign intended to promote the multiple benefits of grass-fed and pasture-raised foods through regional culinary and educational events. Eating Fresh Publications conceived GRAZEFEST® for the purpose of raising awareness of the benefits of pasture-raised foods and to help pasture-based farmers gain markets for their products. Since September 2004, throughout the country, farmers markets and ag-related organizations have been organizing regional GRAZEFESTs, including farmers markets events, on-farm dinners, and town-wide events.

This conference has sessions dealing with agriculture, soil management, and prairie restoration for biofuel production hosted by Winona State University.

Enjoy a day-long workshop combined with site tours designed to introduce you to the fundamentals of Permaculture as applied to the Prairie Oak Institute's cold temperate climate bioregion. Topics include Permaculture Ethics and Design Principles, Permaculture Design Methods, and more!

September 6 - Rural Landowner Workshop & Expo - Burlington, WI
Day-long program sponsored by University of WI Extension and University of IL Extension is designed for rural landowners, horse owners, existing small farmers and/or individuals who are thinking about getting involved in a farm/agricultural enterprise.

September 20 - Organic Vegetable Field Day - Wrenshall, MN
Join us at John and Jane Fisher-Merrits organic vegetable farm. You will learn about their energy efficient root cellar, along with the fall organic vegetable crop production. Field days showcase farming operations and offer tours of their fields. Each half-day session is for all farmers who are interested in organic and sustainable farming practices.
