Farm Manager
The ideal candidate should be someone with experience working with immigrant farmers, operating a farm, operating and maintaining farm equipment, conducting on-farm research projects, and leading beginning farmer training programs. He or she must be culturally astute, mature, possess good judgment, and be committed to equity and inclusion. The candidate must also be willing to perform physical labor and work outside or in the fields in adverse weather conditions. HAFA operates in a fast paced manner and the ideal candidate must be able to solve problems quickly, work alongside partners, staff and farmers, while leading and mentoring a team of junior staff members. Some evening and weekend work may be required for this position. Ability to fluently speak Hmong and familiarity with Hmong culture and customs is important but not exclusive. HAFA is especially interested in candidates who have worked with diverse farming communities. This position will be stationed half of the year at the West Saint Paul office and the other half at the HAFA Farm, a 155 acre incubator and research vegetable farm located in Vermillion Township, Minnesota just 20 minutes outside of Saint Paul.
Responsibilities: Manage the HAFA Farm: Oversee all activities on the HAFA Farm including but not limited to mowing, tilling, soil health, pest management, bee keeping, water flow, gravel roads, farm tours, and farmhouse, shed and building operation, maintenance and safety. As well as supervise farm equipment (mower, ATV, tiller, tractors etc.) maintenance. Supervise the HAFA Research Program: Oversee all activities in the hi-tunnels and on the demonstration plot sites including but not limited to ad hoc and multi-year research projects. Also work with farmers and institutional partners like FSA, UM- Extension etc. to both develop and complete research inquiries. Lead the HAFA Training Program: Oversee all activities connected to developing and delivering a bi-lingual and bi-cultural beginning farmer curriculum and training program for Hmong farmers in Minnesota and across the country.
